Agenda Item 5(c): Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic

Mr Chair,
Australia remains concerned about the lack of action by the Syrian Arab Republic to address the outstanding questions about its facilities and activities at the Dair Alzour site.
We thank the Director General for his continued efforts, and for his regular reporting to the Board of Governors on this issue. We regret that no progress has been seen over successive years.
My delegation urges Syria to fully cooperate with the Agency in line with the Resolution adopted by this Board in June 2011, and subsequent requests by the Director General.
Until this occurs, Australia will continue to draw attention to Syria’s non-compliance with its safeguards obligations, and to call for this item to remain on this Board’s agenda.
