Statement by H.E Mr Richard Sadleir, Governor and Resident Representative of Australia to the IAEA

Chair

Australia warmly welcomes and offers its full support to Mr Grossi upon his appointment to a second term as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

We thank the Director General for his leadership of the Agency in his first term. Under his stewardship, the Agency has effectively and sustainably worked to fulfil its mandate, including in response to the enormous challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.  We commend the Director General’s work to promote and increase access to the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, including through initiatives such as Rays of Hope and NUTEC Plastics. Australia continues to support Director General Grossi’s work to increase women’s representation and leadership in the nuclear realm.

Chair

Australia is a steadfast supporter of the Agency and its central role in the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. We commend Director General Grossi’s commitment to nuclear safety, security and safeguards, including in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Chair

Australia is grateful for the impartial, professional, objective and inclusive efforts of Director General Grossi and the commitment and courage he has brought to the role of Director General. We look forward to continuing to work with Director General Grossi and the Agency to respond effectively to the many challenges and opportunities we face in 2023 and beyond.
