Australia opposes Iran’s serving on the General Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference and considers Iran unfit to take a leadership position in the Vienna body.
Australia voted against Iran’s election as a member on 15 September 2026.
Iran’s grave violations of its obligations directly undermine the Conference’s work for non-proliferation and the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.
Iran has repeatedly failed to cooperate with the IAEA, and the Agency has found Iran in non-compliance with its safeguards agreement. Iran’s non-compliance raises serious proliferation concerns and poses a threat to international peace and security.
