1516th (Special) Meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council
Statement by H.E Ambassador Ian Biggs, Australia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organisations in Vienna
8 April 2025
Secretary General, Chair, Excellencies
Australia welcomes Finland’s leadership in organising this important special session on Ukraine today.
Australia condemns, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s ballistic missile strikes on Kryvyi Rih last Friday. This attack reportedly killed 18 people, including nine children, most of whom were playing in a park.
We mourn the serious loss of life and suffering Russia’s war has inflicted on innocent Ukrainians. Australia recognises the immense courage of the Ukrainian people as they stand up to Russia’s brutal aggression.
We express grave concern at Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, including airstrikes in Kyiv in recent days.
Russia’s invasion is a blatant violation of international law, including the UN Charter, by a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. It fundamentally contravenes the principles upon which the OSCE was founded.
These unprovoked and unjustified attacks have occurred while Russia purports to be negotiating a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Australia will continue to stand with Ukraine. We call upon participating States and Partners to reject Russia’s illegal and immoral war and support a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine, and security and stability in Europe.
Thank you.
