IAEA Board of Governors Meeting

Agenda item 8(b): Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic

14 September 2022

Australia, once again, thanks the Director General for the update provided, in his latest report (GOV/2022/41) and in his opening statement to the Board, on the implementation of safeguards in the Syrian Arab Republic. We also thank the Secretariat for its continued work to address Syria’s non-compliance with its safeguards obligations.

Chair

Australia remains deeply concerned by Syria’s lack of action to address outstanding questions about its undeclared facilities and activities at the Dair Alzour site. We regret  that Syria has not provided any new information in relation to the Dair Alzour site.

Australia again urges Syria to address this long outstanding issue, in line with the Resolution adopted by the Board on 9 June 2011, now 11 years ago, and to cooperate fully and constructively with the IAEA on the implementation of safeguards pursuant to Syria’s NPT Safeguards Agreement.

Chair

We request that this issue remain on the agenda for all future meetings of the Board of Governors, until such time as it is resolved satisfactorily.

Thank you Chair.
